Located just north of Tyler, Texas, down on a small peninsula on the northern bank of Lake Winnsboro in Winnsboro, Texas, there is a small free campsite right on the water.

One night last spring I camped there for the evening. The roads leading in are all paved so any vehicle should have no problem getting to the site. The site has a small building containing restrooms and a spigot with fresh water. There is a large open field with well-maintained grass, a couple of picnic tables and a few designated camp spots but that’s about it for amenities.
While I was there, a few other campers had already occupied the few available campsites, but I just picked a semi flat spot with some shade near the edge of the water and made camp for the night. Most everyone there kept to themselves, but I did have a nice conversation with a young couple who had been living on the road for several years.
The site had a nice strong breeze coming off the water, which kept the mosquitos and bugs at bay. I did not do any fishing while there but was told that the park rangers patrolled on a regular basis checking for licenses. The site is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and campers may stay for up to 14 nights at a time. Overall, this was a great little hidden gem of a campsite that I would recommend for anyone looking for a quiet place to stop for a few nights.
